Lawn Fertilisation & Weed Control

Lawn Fertilisation & Weed Control

The fertilisers we use are a mix of organic and mineral nutrients that provides your grass with the nutrient requirement whilst at the same time stimulating soil life. They are a mix of slow and quick release nutrient that ensure an even growth without instant growth peaks that fade away as quickly as they started. The two types of treatment we offer is Standard & Superior. The Standard treatment comprises of fertilisation and weed control and the Superior treatment includes soil conditioners, which will increase root mass and rooting depth, stimulate microbial activity within the soil and help provide high quality, hard wearing, stress resistant turf.

Spring Treatment

Spring Treatment

After the winter your lawn will start its growth cycle, at this point a feed is essential so the lawn has all the nutrients it requires within the soil structure. Your lawns colour and health will improve by applying a carefully selected, granular, non-scorch, slow release fertiliser, which delivers the nutrients to your lawn at a regulated rate during its initial growth stage. A selective low temperature liquid herbicide to stop early weed developmet.

Late Summer Treatment

Late Summer Treatment

The quality of your lawn during the summer is achieved by our late summer fertiliser, which could be in granular or liquid form dependent on weather conditions. Our technicians will carry out an inspection of your lawn and apply the relevant herbicide to maintain your weed-free lawn.

Autumn

Autumn

Autumn brings new requirements for your lawn, the need for nitrogen is less but the grass plant will need higher levels of Potassium to harden the sward. This will help the grass fight fungal problems. The application of herbicide is changed back to a low temperature selective herbicide. The main focus is on sward strength and root development for the oncoming winter.

Winter

Winter

The winter season has now arrived and our focus at this time of the year is on moss control and toughening of the grass. So it’s more resilient against fungal disease, hardening it in preparation for snow/frosts and aiding photosynthesis during low winter day-light.

We will keep you informed on your lawns condition during all visits, as we take time to inspect your lawn for pests and diseases, the advice we give maybe general i.e “cutting the lawn slightly higher” or that you may have a developing problem i.e “leather jackets discovered within your lawn”. We will provide with the solution to any issues that require attention.

Moss

Moss

Moss is a problem for most lawns as it’s a rootless plant spread by spores. It’s associated with damp shaded conditions or after drought where there maybe bare patches. South Hants Lawns can offer a range of treatments to help manage moss within your lawn as simply treating the moss alone will not solve the problem of it reoccurring.

Scarification

Scarification Scarification

Regular scarifying of a lawn will keep the thatch layer (build up of decaying organic matter i.e. grass clippings, dead moss and other debris) at an acceptable level ideally around 1-1.5cm. High levels of thatch can impead on grass growth, effectiveness of fertilisers and watering.

Over-seeding

Over-seeding Over-seeding

Over-seeding is often advised after scarifying has been carried out, as there is often bare patches within the lawn. Over-seeding will infill the patches and thicken up the lawn so it becomes difficult for problems like moss to establish again.

Disease Control

Disease Control

Diseases within a lawn are difficult to totally eradicate total as they are often caused by an underlying problem. Diseases are often first noticed by patches appearing on your lawn if you have patches call and we will be happy to advise further as it’s often a case of identifying the root cause and best managing that in conjunction with a fungicide application

Aeration

Aeration Aeration

Aerating lawns is a way of getting airflow through the soil / root structure of the grass plant. A well aerated lawn will manage better in periods of prolonged drought or waterlogging. When South Hants Lawns carries out a Hollow Tine aeration we will always rake up the cores that have been removed, we don’t not leave them all over the lawn as this has adverse effects.

Leather Jackets

Leather Jackets

Leather Jackets are the larvae of the crane fly (daddy long legs) the crane fly injects its eggs into the ground around September and the larvae emerge from the eggs around October. They the feed on the grass roots throughout the winter. Often signs of a leather jacket problem is birds pecking at the ground or areas dyeing off rapidly leaving a bare patch of soil.

Chafer Grubbs

Chafer Grubbs

Chafer Grub are the larvae of chafer beetle or May bug. The larvae are easy to identify, their bodies are whitish in colour and curved like the letter C with brown coloured heads and 3 legs either side.

The damage is more visible between the autumn and spring when the grass will tend to look yellowish in colour and start to die off. This is because the grubs feed on the grass and other plant roots. Birds can start to peck at the ground (particularly the crow family) foxes and badgers will also tear up the ground to get to the grubs. Infestations can be highly localised, but can spread out as the grubs look for food.

Again the key is to treat at the correct time and over a period of up to 3-5 seasons
